The LA Times reports that a 12 year old boy was beaten up over the weekend in Calabasas, California and the Country Sherrif is blaming a Facebook Message entitled ‘kick a ginger day’ for the incident.
The sherrif is reportedly questioning Facebook’s monitoring procedures.

Research published yesterday points out that the generation most likely to shop online are those over 65.
Although this an American study, the UK is always about a year behind, so it’s important to remember this statistic and cater for over 65s when designing and organising a company’s website.
Over 65s generally:
- Need trust and credibility before buying online.
- They research products and services more.
- They are more likely to buy from a brand they know already.
- Site Security is more an issue.
- Word of mouth recommendations hold more sway.

PPC is another acronym called Pay Per Click. Some internet experts call it Cost Per Click or CPC for short. It is a form of advertising that is usually displayed as sponsored listing or sponsored links on the search engines and other websites.
What does it involve?
It involves bidding for your place in the sponsored listings, the higher the bid, the higher the placement for your advert. Then when someone clicks on your ad, you are charged by the search engine, hence the term ‘Pay Per Click’
Yesterday, Kodak’s Chief Marketing Officer, Jeffrey Hazlett said on the BBC Programme, “Working Lunch” that Kodak now employ a chief listener as well as a Chief Blogger.
What does a chief listener do?
A chief listener main responsibilities lie with what the consumers, blog visitors as well as their company’s ‘fans’ and ‘friends’ on social networking sites like Facebook.
Their job is to read what comments are said about their products/services and then be proactive about those comments whether if they are compliments or complaints.
They may reply to the comments themselves, facilitate communication between the correct company department and the comment maker or they may make suggestions or advise the company on how to improve their products or services.
Why is it important?
This is an important because it shows some blue chip companies are taking social media websites seriously as a marketing channel. What Kodak does online is also usually followed by the majority of online businesses. For example, Kodak was one of first to blue chip companies to utilise both SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and PPC (Pay Per Click) for marketing.

Google employee hints at website speed becoming part of its ranking formula
Matt Cutts, one of the most respected guys at Google for advice on Google search, hinted that website speed may soon become a part of the Google ranking formula.
At the weekend, speaking to webpronews, Cutts said that:
“We’re starting to think more and more about should speed be a factor in Google’s rankings?
…A lot of people within Google think that the web should be fast, it should be a good experience; and so it’s sort of fair to say if you’re a fast site, maybe you should get a little bit of a bonus. Or maybe if you have a really awfully slow site, users don’t want that as much.”

Google ranking is the formula Google uses to rank websites when uses its search function.
How does Google rank websites?
Every so often, If Google is aware of your website, it downloads the pages of your website and puts the sites in its database. The technical name for this it is “spiders” your website.
Then when a user types in a keyword of something he/she wants to research, the google accesses its database to find what is the most relevant websites to that search.
Google decides on what is most relevant by a number of measures, but to simplify it, it is includes the following:
- The specific percentage of text includes the keyword (not to small or too big an amount.)
- How prominent the keyword is in the text (e.g. in the headings, beginning of sentences, the coding of the page, etc)
- The quality of the programming behind the creation of the web page.)
- If the page includes what it terms as ’spam’
- If the website has links from sites that Google reveres.

The Guardian reports that Orange sold over 30,000 units on its first day of trading iPhones.
Orange ended O2’s exclusivity on iPhones this year and its first day of selling attracted huge interest from Orange customers and its prospects.
